The University of Maine Farmington gives a nod to flag desecration passed off as art. Take a look at this video found at the Maine College Republicans blog at the hassle given to one Veteran who tried to protect Old Glory.

Flag project hits nerve

FARMINGTON – University student Susan Crane of Auburn got an unexpected emotional response Tuesday when she laid out her art project of U.S. flags on the floor of the Olsen Student Center. Her purpose was to find out how people felt about Old Glory, and her gauge was whether they would walk around them or on them.
Veteran Charles Bennett of Farmington sat on one to protect it from being walked on. Other veterans and students asked Crane to pick them up, saying it was disrespectful and desecrating.
Other students said they didn’t see a problem with the display.
Crane, 40, a senior majoring in education, had placed large and small flags on the floor in a zig-zag pattern that created a path through the main corridor.
“I did a lot of research surrounding the flag,” she said, before deciding to do the project.
“My purpose was to figure out how people felt about the flag and gave them a choice to walk around it. And then what it really became is our First Amendment that everybody has a choice to say what they believe. I expected it to be controversial but not as controversial as it has become.”
The project was not an easy choice for her, she said.
“I really had a hard time putting the flags on the floor. I’m a conservative Republican, and I come from a military family,” she said. “I do believe in the flag as a symbol of freedom and what our country stands for. I first thought I could put paper under the flags but it was a safety hazard. I still really have not come to terms that the flags are on the floor. So that bothered me. I understand veterans fought in the war, and they died for our freedom. Other people have the choice to feel how they would interpret it.”
Crane’s professor of visual arts, Katrazyna Randall, had asked students to do a project that could be either guerrilla art or a social experiment. The latter is when artists use visual communication to foster a response from their art, which will generally shed light on social behavior or a political issue, Randall said.
Crane had 24 hours to display her project but expected to take it down by 6 p.m., way ahead of the 4 a.m. deadline Wednesday.
“The best part about this whole thing,” Crane said, “is that it has made people stop and think about what is important to them.”
Bennett had explained to Crane why the flag shouldn’t be on the ground and volunteered to help her pick them up. She declined.
“Don’t desecrate it by putting it on the ground,” Bennett said.
A Web site on flag etiquette states that a flag should never touch anything beneath it and if it does, it should be moved.
Bennett started to pick up flags but was stopped by UMF Public Safety Director Ted Blais, who told him if he continued, he would be arrested.
“He cannot damage her project. He cannot take apart her project. This is her art project. She has the right to have a project here, and if he starts taking it apart, I have to stop him,” Blais said. “I’ve been impressed how people have been respectful of the flag.”
Farmington firefighters were on hand after a student complained the floor project was a hazard and hindered egress.
UMF President Theo Kalikow said Crane followed UMF policies and procedures, watched for handicap accessibility and complied with all recommendations. And the university’s attorney advised Crane had the right to do the display.
“It’s her project. … I think the student wanted to find out what would happen and she did. This is a learning environment,” Kalikow said. “It’s personally repugnant to me to have the flag on the floor. I would never do this, but I have to protect the project.”
Crane’s father, John McIlhinney of North Windham, retired from the U.S. Coast Guard, said he supported his daughter.
“There is no law against it. I wouldn’t step on it, but there is no law against it,” McIlhinney said.
I have a hard time believing that the art student is telling the entire truth about being a conservative. It should go against the grain to treat Old Glory like this no matter what.

First let me respond with I as well would never step on the American Flag! What I think people need to know is that the flags displayed for this purpose where not real flags but merly reperesentations, they were thrown together with ducktape and poster board. Had these of been the real thing I would be one of the first people arrested for picking up the flags.
I also think it is very unfair that people are bashing the administration for allowing this when they were upholding what the flag represents. ITs all about freedom brothers!!!!
What I find shameful with all of this is the name calling and bad mouthing of individuals on BOTH sides.
First of all cut the brothers garbage. I doubt very seriously you are related to anyone around here and the old brothers and sisters slang is as old as saying groovy.
A simulation of the flag is still considered a flag according to the flag code.

Of course the libs think this is just a wonderful expression of free speech. I think it’s disgusting. I don’t care if her old man said it was fine and dandy.
What about the famous photo of Iwo Jima? Why did they bother to raise the flag?
Many of our Universities have become cesspools of liberalism -it’s now cool to “hate America.” The University of Maine is a standard barer of this insidious movement.
A better project would be to teach the meaning of symbols. The American flag is a symbol of the struggle of people for freedom and individual liberty. It is the symbol of the first country based on the value of each individual and not to be subjugated by others. It is a struggle that took over 200 years and is still going on. To step on it is stepping on all those who made sacrifices for the cause that the flag represents. Stepping on it is a stupid show of defiance and ignorance.
I can’t say anything that hasn’t already been said except that while men were fighting overseas, the lefties went to work indoctrinating the youngsters that communism is just as good as capitalism, “Make love (physically) not war” meaning that those that serve in the military shouldn’t be proud because they had been duped into killing, and only fifty years ago, to even suggest that people should walk on American flags would not have been tolerated.
But the chickens have come home to roost.

I find it amazing that in spite of free speech this university would allow such a project for the sake of a student project or study. Being liberal is one thing, but not disrespect for our nations flag. Yes the US Flag is a piece of cloth that should be respected. Men and women have died for that piece of cloth for over 200 years. It’s not just the cloth, it is what the cloth represents. For one thing it is the freedom’s and values this nation has fought for. This will always be a controversial issue, and should never be a students project.
Possession being nine-tenths of the law, and finders keepers. If the flag or other valuable is not physically in a person’s hands then a responsible person/adult/veteran should take charge of it for safe keeping.
You can find phone numbers, home addresses and google earth maps for many of the players at UMF and the flags on floor art show at

You can also find a photo of UMF president there as well. Before you ask (many have today) it’s a woman. We think.

he Grodner Effect:
A person, politican or company, particularly a lawyer or law firm who is corrupt and arrogant tries to create a position in which he or the company, party or entity for which they work or represent can repress or harm an individual or individuals simply by having connections in the legal system, political connections or personal wealth. That person, party or entity gets blogged and the entire story goes viral on the Internet, causing the person or entity who is blogged about to lose pretty much everything, like our hero and pet, Jay Grodner.

My husband is a graduate of the University of Maine, class of 1957. In his will he stipulated a large sum of money to leave for his Alma Mater. Tomorrow he’ll go to see his lawyer and have that removed. No sense in throwing good money down the cesspool the University of Maine has apparently become.
As Gerald Walkins wrote: “Many of our Universities have become cesspools of liberalism -it’s now cool to “hate America.” The University of Maine is a standard barer of this insidious movement.”
Moni:
Isn’t it sad when you feel let down by the very institutions that educated you? Campuses have become controlled by liberals who do not want our youth to think.
but isn't freedom of expression one of those freedoms and values we hold in high regard? People died for this COUNTRY and this country is represented by the PEOPLE in it, not a colored piece of fabric. It would be kind of absurd to think peole have been giving their lives for centuries for a piece of cloth you can pick up at Walmart for less than a dollar. Those people have been dying for the VALUES AND FREEDOMS that flag represents, one of them being duhn duhn duhn… FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION. Wow what a neat little lesson.
The flag ultimately represents our freedom. It is a symbol of why our country is as great as it is. It represents the freedom to express oneself IN ANY WAY as long as the form of expression isn't causing physical damage to another person. If we start censoring peoples' artistic expression and creating an uproar because someone laid an IMITATION of a flag on the ground then where does it end? In a sad totalitarian future of limited expression will we not be able to even give the flag a dirty look without being crucified or atleast berated by a bunch of angry people who thirst for a cause? If you don't like seeing the flag on the ground don't look at it. If anything offends you, stay AWAY from it instead of immersing yourself in useless, petty anger. How hard is that?
How hard is it to understand that disrespect of the flag is terrible offensive to many. If liberals are hell bent for PC behavior why do they not understand that the symbol deserves respect? I will not stoop to using belittling terms such as duhhhhh. But lack of common sense is this matter is mind bending. having something on the floor is dirty and offensive. You can’t help but look if you are gifted with eyesight.
thank god some sense with someone with brains
